Due to the special properties of PAN such as low density, thermal stability, high resistance and elasticity modulus, stability to degradation by UV rays, non-melting and chemical resistance, make it an essential polymer for textile and high technology applications.
PAN has been used since its discovery mainly for textile applications due to its wool-like characteristics.
All fiber production is carried out by 2 processes only, known as wet spinning and dry spinning.
The other main application of PAN is in the production of carbon fiber, accounting for about 90% of its worldwide production.
Other minority applications are:
- Fibers for cement reinforcement;
- Filtration membranes;
- Awning fabrics and out-door applications;
- Oxidized PAN fibers for thermal and acoustic insulation;
- Anti-flame fibers; and
- Manufacture of felts for hot air filtration.
